Esposende Interceptor Canal
ESPOSENDE INTERCEPTOR CANAL
The Esposende Interceptor Canal is an infrastructure built to protect the urban area of the city from flooding.
This canal is about 4.5 km long and outlines a path that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Cávado river, surrounding the entire city at its source.
Along this route, several flow monitoring sensors are placed, which allow, in real time, the use of alternative water drainage points. Alongside the canal, around 30,000 shrub and stacier species have been planted, in addition to the adoption of materials to safeguard the natural heritage, namely wildlife and habitats.
Besides its importance in flood protection, the canal is also an interesting tourist attraction to visit, because parallel to it, there is a pathway that completes a visiting and sporting circuit, connecting the North Coastal Ecovia to the future city park, making a green ring around the whole city of Esposende.
On this route, visitors can enjoy a unique landscape, framed by the green of the fields and the blue of the crystalline waters that run through the canal.
