“Scratching the Surface – WOMEN OF THE SEA” BY ALEXANDRE FARTO AKA VHILS
The work stands as a tribute to the people of the sea and is perpetuated near the river and the sea, elements that orbit within the identity and memory of the place, through the talent of one of the most renowned Portuguese artists of today.
Vhils' works are spread across the four corners of the world, and his unmistakable technique removes the excess from constructed matter, transforming it into much more than faces in contexts. These are images with soul, which eternalize the essence of History as portrayed by its most notable figures: artists, poets, and, above all, ordinary citizens who make a difference in all simple daily lives. In this case, through the faces of Women, it highlights those who were anchors on land, who also made the land a place of diaspora, travel, and adventure; those who gave their bodies to the sea and who reaped sustenance from the sea and proliferated it.
